Edison shuts out Fountain Valley 24-0

The annual “Battle of the Bell” rivalry game, which pits Edison vs. Fountain Valley, showed why the Edison Chargers are a nationally ranked team. In front of over 10,000 fans and after a very competitive first half, the undefeated Chargers took over the game after halftime, handing Fountain Valley a defeat in the annual classic for the fifth consecutive year.

The Chargers did not waste any time, moving down the field on their opening drive to the Barons 23-yard-line. But the Barons escaped with no Charger points on the board after a missed field goal. The defensive stand caused the Barons to believe this game was within reach, but the Chargers had different plans. The key to the Charger win would be Edison’s defense, which played strong throughout the night, collecting four sacks, one interception, and a shutout of the Fountain Valley offense.

With a combined effort from the offense and defense, Edison controlled the game after halftime. Markus Trujillo missed that first field goal attempt but hit three more during the night. Those field goals along with the efforts of junior running back and game MVP Davion Orphey, who finished with 124 yards on 12 carries, allowed the Chargers to defeat the Barons 24-0.

The clocked ticked down with Edison extending their winning streak to 8-0, a feat they had not accomplished since 1990. The team hoisted Head Coach Dave White on their shoulders, and as they celebrated their victory in the 2009 “Battle for the Bell” the Great American Rivalry Series MVP was selected. Air Force SSgt Guevara presented Davion Orphey with his medal and trophy in front of his teammates and fans and then addressed the team. After a few words, she handed over the Great American Rivalry Series Championship Trophy to Coach White to loud cheers by the entire Charger team, coaches, fans, and families.
